Climbing Mt Fuji in a Day (or climbing at all) - Part 2: How to Prepare

Updated: 4 days ago

I recently posted about how to actually get to Fuji and up and down in a day. That said, I was really surprised when I climbed with the equipment people brought, so here are my thoughts on what you need to prepare for. Remember, this isn't a small hill in your nearby park...

First off, equipment. Shoes are important. I was really surprised at the number of people (foreigners especially) wearing very basic road running shoes with little grip. Going up you’ll probably be ok, but on the way down it won’t be fun. I can’t remember how many foreigners I saw on their butts after falling on the way down. I wore HOKA Speedgoats. Any proper hiking or even running backpack will work, but I’d make sure you bring around 2 liters of water. I used the Fjall Raven Abisko 35L hiking pack and the Platypus bladder plus a water bottle with some energy drink. You can buy drinks on the way up at the various huts, but unless you like buying things that are way overpriced and not worth it, I’d suggest bringing beforehand. Although not a very difficult hike, this is a pretty big mountain, so you definitely need proper rain gear and I threw in a lightweight fleece as well (which I didn’t use but you never know in the mountains). I wore a running t-shirt and shorts as well as some compression for my calfs.

Next is food. Don’t be dumb and think you can buy everything on the way up. I already mentioned water, but I also brought one pack of Bonk Breaker Rainbowblast Energy Chews. It tastes like real food and doesn’t mess with the stomach which is much better than most energy food. That said, I also like food food, especially bacon. So, I cooked up some bacon the night before and brought it in a zip-lock bag. That along with some nuts, dried mango and a rice ball from 7-eleven was enough. I also brought one pack of Saltstick fast chews for electrolytes which always work well. Again you can buy some food at the huts, but I wouldn’t rely on it. Plus, if you want to do it in a day you need to keep moving and you shouldn’t be taking long breaks.

That should do it. Best of luck!
